Boris
Karloff certainly suffered for his art during the filming of Frankenstein
(1931). It took over three hours to
apply the monster’s makeup and according to Karloff the makeup was extremely painful.
The boots Karloff wore weighed 13 pounds each and were used to give him a
lurching stride.
