Lon Chaney played dual roles in Tod Browning’s London After
Midnight (1927), that of Inspector Edward
C. Burke and “The Man in the Beaver Hat”. It was the “The Man in the beaver Hat” role that put
Chaney on Universal’s short list of actors to play Dracula which was in
preproduction at that time. Had Chaney not died in 1930 there is little doubt
that he would have been cast in the lead role of Dracula (1931).
