Not only is The Infernal Boiling Pot (Le
Chaudron Infernal) (1903) one of the first horror films produced but it is very
likely to be the first horror film in color. The coloring process involved hand-painting each
frame of the negative, an incredibly tedious task. This French silent film was directed by the
early film pioneer and stage magician, Georges Méliès. As in most of Méliès' films The
Infernal Boiling Pot(1903) is full of stop motion special effects. Méliès
also produced such silent classics as, The Vanishing Lady (1896), The Haunted Castle (1896) , Robbing Cleopatra's Tomb (1899) and A
Trip to the Moon (1902).
